WASHINGTON (TND) — Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., made a striking comparison in the House Tuesday when he connected the rhetoric of former President Donald Trump to that of Adolf Hitler.
"When you say that you want to pollute, that immigrants are polluting this country, that to me— and the blood of this country, that is absolutely reminiscent of things that Adolf Hitler said,” Rep. Garcia said.
The comparison preceded an assessment of border control tactics which Rep. Garcia said Trump and other “MAGA majority” Republicans had advocated for. He displayed strategies using a large poster board, including erecting an electric fence on the southern border, digging an alligator moat and bombing northern Mexico with missiles.
When asked by a colleague to clarify the connection between Trump and Hitler given his presentation, Rep. Garcia doubled down on the stance.
His imagery, the way he supports white nationalism, the way he supports white supremacy and those kind of comments are completely offensive to immigrants and hopefully all Americans,” Rep. Garcia said.The Golden State politician is not the first Democratic figure to liken Trump to Hitler. MSNBC anchor Joy Reid opened her show last week with a monologue comparing how both figures rose to power.
“Like Trump, Hitler was also viewed as a clown, a goon who could be kept in line,” Reid said. “SO much of this sounds familiar, and believe me, I wish it didn’t.”
Comedian Joy Behar of ABC's “The View” also made such a comparison, claiming former President Barack Obama “created” Trump through his use of humor in the same way Charlie Chaplin did with Hitler.
“It makes him so angry,” Behar said of Trump’s reactions to comparisons to Hitler. “I don’t know what he’s going to do next. You make a joke about him and he’ll annihilate the whole world.”
